Baggage rules

Before your flight with airBaltic, we kindly ask you to familiarise yourself with our baggage rules. We also recommend you use Manage my booking to check your booking class to confirm how much baggage you are entitled to carry.

Hand luggage

For the safety and convenience of you and your fellow passengers, each passenger (except infants) is allowed:

  • 2 pieces of hand luggage with Business Smart and Business Elite tickets
  • 1 piece of hand luggage with an 8 kg weight limit with Economy Smart, Economy Elite and Basic tickets.

Hand luggage must be stowed under the seat in front of you or in the locker above your seat. The overall dimensions of each piece of hand luggage may not exceed 55x40x20 cm.

Passengers with reduced mobility are allowed to bring auxiliary devices into the aircraft cabin, provided that safety rules are not violated.

Briefcases, laptops, cameras etc. must be carried within your single piece of hand luggage. All passengers are entitled to carry one duty free item purchased at the airport in addition to the hand luggage included in the ticket price. Extra/oversized hand luggage will be refused at the boarding gate or, where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of EUR 60.

If you are unsure about the size and/or weight of your hand luggage, please contact the baggage drop-off desk before going through security. If your hand luggage is found to exceed the limits, you will be required to check it in for a EUR 40 fee. This is cheaper than what you would be charged at the gate!

Checked baggage

Each piece of free checked baggage and each piece of additionally purchased baggage entitles the passenger to a 20 kg allowance per piece.

For example: 1 bag included in the fare (20 kg) + 1 extra bag purchased at the airport (20 kg) = 2 bags / 40 kg

  • 1 bag - 20 kg
  • 2 bags - 40 kg
  • 3 bags - 60 kg
  • 4 bags - 80 kg
  • 5 bags - 100 kg

Checked baggage allowances per class:

Business Elite - up to 3 pieces of checked baggage with a joint weight of up to 60 kg free of charge.

Business Smart - up to 3 pieces of checked baggage with a joint weight of up to 60 kg free of charge.

Heavy baggage fee

At the airport, if any piece of checked baggage exceeds the 20 kg per bag allowance, passengers will be charged a EUR 40 heavy baggage fee. This charge is applied per bag not per kg. The charge is collected only at airports.

The maximum weight of one piece of checked baggage is 32 kg! So, the heavy baggage fee will be applied to all pieces of checked baggage weighing between 21 and 32 kg!

If your checked baggage allowance exceeds both the number of pieces and weight allowed, both fees will be applied simultaneously.

All  baggage fees are non-refundable.

On flights not operated by airBaltic

On airBaltic.com, passengers can only buy extra baggage for flights operated by airBaltic. If your itinerary includes flights operated by airlines other than airBaltic, airBaltic baggage fees may not be applicable. airBaltic determines the number of free bags and their weight limit if the first leg of the journey is operated by airBaltic. If the first leg of the journey is not operated by airBaltic, the number of free bags and their weight limit is determined by the respective carrier. Please contact the airBaltic call centre or e-mail reservations@airbaltic.com for detailed information on the free baggage allowance included in your ticket.

Restricted items

Before flying we request passengers consult the information on Baggage restrictions - the transporting of dangerous goods and restricted articles.

Duty free liquids

As of 31 January 2014, duty free liquids purchased at any Schengen or non-Schengen airport or on board any airline may be carried as hand luggage, provided the following conditions apply:

  • The duty free liquid and receipt must be sealed at the time of purchase inside a security bag with a red border.
  • The security bag is not opened until arrival at the passenger’s final destination.
  • For security screening at transit airports, the duty free purchase will be taken out of your hand luggage and screened separately (similarly to what is done with laptops).
  • The security officer may need to open the security bag for screening. In case the passenger has a connecting flight at another airport, he/she shall alert the security officer so the duty free liquids can be re-sealed in a new security bag.

Please note, the new procedure may result in longer queues at security control points. Make sure you leave yourself enough time to reach the gate for boarding!

For more detailed information, please refer to the European Commission's Information for air travellers.
