Baltic Outlook

December 2005/January 2006

Editorial
The year 2005 has again been a year full of remarkable change in the Baltic aviation markets. As expected, the market liberalisation after EU-membership has led to a substantial increase in passenger numbers. At the same time this has generated an even greater increase in competition, particularly from low-cost carriers. Over 70% of the Latvian aviation market is now taken up by low-cost carriers, including airBaltic. Latvia is therefore the country with the highest low-cost penetration in the world.

With the inauguration of airBaltic’s new flight to the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk, the Latvian airline has broadened its portfolio of destinations within the former USSR. To increase the ease and flexibility of travel to these destinations, airBaltic offers passengers flying from airports across Scandinavia one-way ticketing to selected Russian, Belarussian and Ukrainian cities.

Don’t forget: kids go for LVL 1!
One-way ticketing is not the only advantageous system which airBaltic offers its customers. For the last two years, the airline has also been benefiting family travellers with its “kids go for LVL 1” policy. According to this offer, if an adult reserves seats to travel with a child aged 11 or under, the child’s ticket costs precisely LVL 1 (LTL 5 /EUR 2) plus the relevant airport taxes.

E-dessert: sweet sensation
Yet another long-standing benefit of the airBaltic system is its “E-dessert” series of discount tickets: a range of ticket offers available to passengers who book online.

Catherine’s Glory
Opened to the world only ten years ago after decades as a closed, military-industrial city, Dnepropetrovsk is full of surprises. Founded by order of Catherine the Great to commemorate Russia’s victory in the Russian-Turkish war of 1768 – 74 and to cement her hold on the southern steppes, it has been a bastion of both Russian imperialism and revolutionary communism. Now it encapsulates the new dynamism of post-independence Ukraine.
