airBaltic Vilnius

From 1st June 2004 the Latvian airline airBaltic, in co-operation with the SAS Group, is starting flights from Vilnius to five European destinations, adding four more by the end of the summer. The flights will be operated by airBaltic, which will be the first airline in the Baltic states to take advantage of the opening up of the aviation market following EU accession, by launching operations from another state.

Initially airBaltic is offering flights from Vilnius to Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne and Dublin. These flights will be served by Boeing 737-500 aircraft. By the end of the summer (August 15th) airBaltic plans to add four more destinations – Helsinki, Oslo, Vienna and Warsaw, served by Fokker 50 aircraft.

airBaltic is offering one-way tickets starting from 99 lits (airport charges not included). The one-way ticket model is based on demand driven pricing: the fuller the flight, the higher the price. Thus, the earlier tickets are purchased, the more attractive their price. This new airBaltic pricing model is much simpler from the passenger's viewpoint than traditional pricing models. Under this structure there are no travel restrictions such as time of travel, Sunday rule, duration of stay or advance purchase. It also offers more options for one-way trips, which can easily be combined with other tourism services.

Announcing the services Bertolt Flick, President of airBaltic, said: “We introduced the concept of one-way fares starting with low prices in Latvia. It has proved to be very popular and meets our passengers’ demands for more flexible and less costly traveling possibilities. With the EU and the Open Skies accord it is only natural that we expand our operations. Our aim is to offer regular air transport between Vilnius and Europe's major cities at prices that are competitive, not only with regard to other airlines, but also in comparison with the cost of travel by bus, car, train or ferry.”

All flights offer a two-class service concept. Business class passengers will receive full service including a meal. Economy class passengers will have the opportunity to purchase meals and refreshments during the flight.
