From the Baltic to the Caspian Sea: new route to Baku

At the same time, airBaltic launched its first direct flight to another Caucasian metropolis: Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Poised on a peninsula overlooking the Caspian Sea, and surrounded by towering cliffs, this stop on the Silk Road made its fortune in the late nineteenth century as the home of one of the world’s first oil rushes.

Now imposing late-Empire buildings rise alongside ancient stone mosques and caravanserais. Oil platforms ring the city to land and sea, and the current oil boom is driving a business revolution. Beyond the city, the mountainous valleys of the “Land of fire” stretch up into the Caucasus, and old ways and new mingle on the city’s roads.  Flights from Riga to Baku operate on Wednesdays and Sundays. The flight lasts 3 hours and 50 minutes.

The price of a one-way ticket starts at LVL 50.60 (EUR 72), including airport fees.
