airBaltic recommends its top 5 romantic getaways

With St. Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to put on a Barry White CD, dim the lights, open a bottle of champagne and consider where you are going to spend the most romantic day of the year, courtesy of airBaltic…

Liepaja

With its coastal location and long, empty beaches (at this time of the year at least), Liepaja is perfect for romantic walks holding hands – even if you might need to wear your mittens when the wind gets up! If you want to go the whole hog and emulate the sexiest scene in "From Here to Eternity" you can even roll around in the sand a bit.

Once you’ve dusted yourself down again, why not head into town and enjoy some of Latvia’s best nightlife? Liepaja is something of a musical metropolis so it’s rarely difficult to find some live music to get you in the mood. Whether your taste tends toward sultry jazz or the swelling strings of the local symphony orchestra, you’ll have no trouble tracking something down. If music be the food of love, play on, as the poet wrote.

airBaltic flies to Liepaja from Riga twice a day on weekdays and once a day at weekends, from Copenhagen daily (except Saturdays) and from Hamburg on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Paris

With their reputation as the world’s great lovers well known (particularly amongst themselves), the French have created perhaps the world’s most romantic city in Paris. As well as the architecture which has served as the backdrop to countless romances from "Un Homme et une Femme" to "A Bout de Souffle" and "Amelie" you have the whole gamut of romantic aids to hand – champagne, French chocolates, exquisite food and the latest fashions to make sure you look your best for your loved one.

airBaltic flies to Paris from Riga on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays and commences a service from Vilnius to Paris at the end of March on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

St. Petersburg

What do you get if you take a swamp, Italian architects, Dutch engineers and put several million Russian workers at their disposal, with money no object? You get St. Petersburg, Peter the Great’s contrary confection of a city. Sometimes described as the "Venice of the north", St. Petersburg really is like no other place on earth.

There is no better location for peoplewatching than the famous Nevsky Prospekt, today lined with expensive designer stores. But stray just a few metres off it and you enter an intriguing, romantic world of beautiful crumbling villas, pallid canals and intriguing backstreets. Even if you get lost as you wander arm-in-arm, you can pause and watch as the bridges linking the various islands open to let ships pass.

airBaltic flies to St. Petersburg from Riga up to twice a day.

Barcelona

If Latin passion is what you’re after, Barcelona is a must. Just don’t make the mistake of calling it Spain, as the locals will waste no time in reminding you that this is actually Catalunya. Barcelona is becoming an extremely popular destination for honeymooning couples, and it’s not hard to work out why. It’s got it all – the famous ‘must-see’ architecture of Gaudi, a decent beach within walking distance of the centre, some of Europe’s best shopping (check out the El Corte Ingles department stores for superb value clothes) and a vibrant café culture for those days when all you want to do is gaze into your loved one’s eyes over horchada and churros.

airBaltic flies to Barcelona from Riga on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and from Vilnius on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Hurghada

How about Hurghada for a holiday romance? The combination of sea, sun and sand is usually enough to get people’s thoughts turning towards all things amorous – particularly if you are asked to apply some sun tan lotion to the object of your desire.

Many of the hotels in Hurghada offer spa treatments and massage to get your mind and body in tip-top shape either before or after you make your move. On the other hand, if you want to play the part of a dashing romantic hero, you can climb aboard a camel in local garb before adding to your harem.

You can even let airBaltic organize your entire trip if you buy a complete travel package including flight, hotel transfers and overnight stays. For more information visit the "Travel packages" section at www.airbaltic.com.
