Baltic Outlook

April 2008

Editorial

By the time you read this editorial, passport control between the Baltic countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia – and the Schengen member-states has been removed. This step again underlines the rapid changes and achievements that have taken place in this region: the three countries in question have joined the EU only in 2004. Personally I feel this is the right way to go, how border control between EU countries should be handled.

Venice - jewel of the Adriatic
From the moment you leave Marco Polo Airport, stepping aboard the boat that takes you out onto the lagoon, Venice transports you into another world. The splendours of ‘La Serenissima Repubblica’ (The Most Serene Republic) − the once formidable Venetian state − rise out of the green waters of the lagoon − their marbles and mosaics defying the centuries and the water to awe another generation of visitors. Wandering the twisting canal paths and humpbacked bridges, with the sound of gondoliers’ singing drifting down the waterways, you can almost imagine you’ve travelled back in time − to the days when Venetian adventurers like Marco Polo, roamed the world, bringing its treasures back home with them to embellish the city.
