Riga - Prague

If the centre of Europe has its own centre, then it must be the historic city of Prague. For more than a thousand years, this is where the peoples, cultures, cuisines and architectures of the continent have all come to mix and mingle, and today Prague is just as cosmopolitan as ever. Whether you want to admire the amazing view from the castle gardens, walk across the romantic Charles Bridge in the moonlight or simply wash down a hearty meal with a cool Czech beer - or two - Prague has something for every taste and the glorious hills and forests of the Czech Republic are within easy reach, too.

Riga - Olbia (Sardinia)

Of all the Mediterranean islands, Sardinia remains one of the most fascinating and unspoiled. The city of Olbia acts as a perfect base to explore Sardinia and its amazing beaches but Olbia is much more than a mere transit point with its own great historical and cultural interest. There are numerous fascinating sites of archaeological importance from the ancient and mysterious 'nuraghe' sites to Roman ruins and impressive churches such as  the basilica of San Semplicio and San Paolo. Italy's elite have long made nearby Porto Rotondo, Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda their own and  their yachts and villas look along a coastline of breathtaking beaches and rock formations. There's also Sardinia's highly distinctive and delicious cuisine to treat your tastebuds.

Riga - Rijeka (Croatia)

Rijeka, part of Croatia's seemingly endless riviera, is a compact and elegant town in its own right and the perfect place to stay while exploring the islands and beaches of the Dalmatian coast. Any visit has to begin at the landmark City Tower on Korzo, the main promenade and meeting-point for Rijeka citizens which provides the perfect showcase for the town's relaxed, cultured atmosphere, from which you can move on to  a leisurely stroll along the breakwater known as the Molo Longho, which stretches far out into the deep blue sea water. That should put you in the mood for lunch aboard the floating restaurant Arca Fiumana, where you'll discover why Croatian seafood is among the world's best.

Riga - Malta

It may be small but you'll be amazed how much the sun-kissed island of Malta manages to pack into its 316 square kilometres of land. The capital, Valletta, is a stunning city full of rococo gems such as the Grandmaster's Palace and National Museum of Fine Arts. Providing contrast are huge fortifications that speak of Malta's tempestuous history. But one of the results of being occupied by many different civilizations is the Malta's eclectic mix of Mediterranean cooking with Lampuki (fish) pie and Kapanuta (Maltese ratatouille) not to be missed! A variety of theatres including Valletta's famous Manoel Theatre and two opera houses in Victoria offer wide selection of plays, musicals, operas and concerts.

If classy bars are to your taste, try Ammos or the Times Music Bar. If you're in the mood for something a little wilder, DMC bar is the place to dance the night away. During the daytime, the main tourist attractions include Larnaca Fort, the ancient city of Kition and the impressive Grand Mosque while nature lovers or anyone in the mood for a romantic stroll can follow the award-winning Larnaca to Voroklini beach trail.
