Geography

Lying in the north of France and located on the northbend of the River Seine, this so called City of Lights also includes the two islands of Île Saint-Louis and Île de la Cité for a total area of 105 square km. Spiralling out from its center, Paris is composed of twenty arrondissements, or bouroughs, numbered accordingly and by which the city is divided. This makes for a city to be lost in on foot, mosaically jumbled together as perfectly as a work of art that is ever alive and alluring. A temperate city, save for August, when many shops close down and locals leave the city to escape the heat, Paris is suitable to visit year round. With over 2 million people in the city centre and a total of 11 million in the metropolitan area, Paris is the most populated of the Eurozone cities and with a quarter of France’s GDP, it boasts a robust economy, home to many international businesses. Each year over 45 million tourists make their way to Paris to see just why it is so very impressive.

Languages

Due to the sheer number of tourists that come to visit each year, English is widely understood and tolerated around the major attractions in the city. That being said, French is spoken throughout the city and can prove difficult to understand - even for the advanced learner, as it is heavy with slang and missing syllables. The younger generation is more likely to understand English and to be helpful, but be prepared for a constant language adventure nonetheless.

See and Do

Overly described and infinitely adored for its many facets and excesses, Paris promises a charming city-break for every possible taste. With its elegant combination of the ancient world and the intellectual and cultural edginess that is so typically Parisian, the city makes a travel experience truly come alive. There are of course the highlighted sites on our See and Do: the Eiffel Tower at night with its lights ablaze and the city glinting below, the awe-inspiring majesty of Notre Dame Cathedral, and the endless beauty enclosed within the Louvre museum where one can duck the occasional Paris rain shower. Any visit to Paris must include a visit to Champs-Élysées, a two kilometre avenue that runs east from Place de la Concorde with its obelisk to the west, full of street-side cafes and boutiques and finishing at Place Charles de Gaulle, where Napolean’s Arc de Triomphe stands as the world’s largest victory arch. Then in the Quartier Latin, you can explore a Roman bathhouse or take part in the revelry of a street performance outside the Centre Pompidou. For elegance and pomp, head next to Le Marais, north of Place de la Bastille and indulge in the fashionable assortment of hotels, cafes and restaurants that adorn it before visiting Musee Picasso, showcasing  an impressive variety of the artist’s work.

Along a leisurely stroll beside the Seine it is highly recommended to observe the fishermen at their work and chat a while with the booksellers who populate the bank. And while much of Paris can seem overly expensive to the shoe-string traveler, independent wanderers will find the city delightfully cheap with free admission to many museums and plenty of beautiful neighborhoods to endlessly explore. In fact, some say the best way to enjoy Paris is to lose the map and dive right in!
