Riga - Kuusamo

Every year, nearly a million visitors come to Kuusamo to this winter sports paradise, where the skiing season lasts from mid-October to early June.  Its spirit is that of any Lappish small village and an outpost town of sorts, Kuusamo serves as an excellent launching pad for explorers gearing up for outdoors adventure in Lapland. And there’s plenty of that outdoors around – and tours from kayaking to fishing or hiking to help visitors get going into the wild. Take on a 80 km hike along Bear’s Ring trail through the beautiful and pristine Oulanka National Park, staying in wilderness huts provided by the Finnish Forest Service, until its finish at Raku, Finland’s largest ski resort, for some skiing bliss to end the trip.

Riga - Rovaniemi

No wonder the architect Alvar Aalto laid out the streets of Rovaniemi  like antlers. This is afterall the land of reindeer, Santa Claus and the dazzling northern lights, the epicentre of Lapland. Tourists join the faithful who  flock year on year to Santa Claus Village, where anyone can meet Kris Kringle, mail a special letter at Santa’s Post Office and enjoy all the fun at Santa’s Amusement Park, nestled underground. Within town, the main cultural draw is the Artikum Museum, where visitors discover the rich Lapp culture in its display of handcrafts and artwork from throughout the region. Lapland itself offers a wealth of lakes,  forests  and Arctic tundra to explore, and thousands upon thousands of visitors come through Rovaniemi for precisely this purpose – or to enjoy some excellent skiing at the nearby resorts. 

Riga - Manchester

After London, there’s one British city leaping fast into the spotlight. A city long regarded for its industrial age roots, Manchester has arisen today as the unofficial capital of northern England, vying for the title of nation’s second city. With several of Englands frontrunning universities, it is a haven for students and intellectuals, while also boasting a number of impressive galleries and museums. Of course, this is not to mention a star-studded football club and a music scene always keen on the next new sound. There’s no wonder that many are passing by on London and heading north to see for themselves what mighty Manchester is all about.

It is an up-and-coming centre, where ancient Roman and Phoenician origins blend with the grandeur of Ottoman architecture and a daring, modern edge in outright contrast to any regional stereotype, creating a city like no other on earth. Its people are warm-hearted and welcoming, there are museums, mosques and trendy restaurant bars, a wild upsurge of nightlife and a rollicking party scene. Riga - Amman

Jordan’s capital city, Amman is more nearly two cities in one, with its more traditional east split from the trendy west, and they are as different as night and day. Amman offers a range of interesting sights, from its well preserved Roman amphitheatre, an excellent Islamic Museum, a decent selection of mosques, the antiquity of its old town and, yes, plenty of first rate shopping. Amman also makes a perfect starting point for excursions to the Dead Sea and surrounding territories.

airBaltic will start direct flights to London on March 4, to Dublin on March 29 and to Hamburg on March 30. The airline will operate the first flight to Oslo on May 17.

Riga - Umea

You’ll find Umea a bustling university city, the fifth largest in Sweden, with a rich sense of local history on display at its several fine museums and at the open air Pengsjö Museum in particular. In the neighbouring villages, explore the caves, wood cutters cabins and Bronze Age remnants of the distant past.
