Rijeka is the third largest city in Croatia with a population of around 130,000. It sits on Kvarner Bay, part of the Adriatic Sea which is famed for its spectacular coastline and many islands. Rijeka itself has an impressive setting with mountains on three sides and the sea on the fourth.
This part of Croatia has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and mild but rather rainy winters.

Croatian is a Slavic language. Closely related to Serbian, it uses the Latin rather than Cyrillic alphabet. In tourist areas, English, Italian and German can also be heard fairly frequently.

See and Do

Rijeka, part of Croatia's seemingly endless riviera, is a compact and elegant town in its own right and the perfect place to stay while exploring the islands and beaches of the coast.
Any visit has to begin at the landmark City Tower on Korzo, the main promenade and meeting-point for Rijeka citizens which provides the perfect showcase for the town's relaxed, cultured atmosphere, from which you can move on to  a leisurely stroll along the breakwater known as the Molo Longho, which stretches far out into the deep blue sea water.
That should put you in the mood for lunch aboard the floating restaurant Arca Fiumana, where you'll discover why Croatian seafood is among the world's best.
One of Rijeka's claims to fame is that it was the birthplace of the torpedo. The remains of the factory where the first ones were made can still be visited and include the ramp where in 1866 the world's first torpedo was launched.
Venturing further afield is simple too, with fast road and rail connections to both Zagreb and Ljubljana.
