Flights to Liepāja
In May of 2017 airBaltic began operating domestic flights from Riga to Liepāja, thereby opening up new travel opportunities between both cities, as well as increasing convenient connections to 60 airBaltic destinations and the already existing flight connections to Palanga.
Located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, Liepāja is known as “the city where the wind is born”. It is also the third largest city in Latvia, the capital of the Kurzeme ethnographic region, and a favourite tourist destination along this stretch of coastline along the Baltic Sea. airBaltic operates flights to the recently updated Liepāja International Airport, which lies 7 km from the city centre.
In Liepāja, the Latvian language has a colourful regional accent characterised by the cutting off of word endings and conjugating all nouns as if they were masculine. Some vowels are pronounced broader than in traditional Latvian, and there are numerous synonyms that are used nowhere else in Latvia.
What to see and do
Enjoy the sun, wind and fresh sea air on the white beaches of Liepāja. Swimming and sunbathing are popular pastimes, and the choice of active recreational pursuits is extensive. There is also no lack of an active social scene with numerous pubs and cafes along the waterfront.
Liepāja’s Karosta (Military Port) neighbourhood is a special feature in the city – for many years it was a restricted military zone under its own jurisdiction, which is why today it reveals such a well-preserved look back into the past. A must-see is the Karosta Prison, which over its 100-year history was used by various regimes and authorities; now it can be experienced either through a regular tour or, for the brave-at-heart, by a reality performance requiring audience participation or various espionage-themed adventure games. You can even spend a night in the supposedly haunted prison – but rest assured, they’ll release you in the morning.
The almost 2km-long Northern Quay is a fantastic place for a stroll – just be sure to avoid it during stormy weather.
Chic and elegant cafes and restaurants are currently popping up in Liepāja at unprecedented levels. Outside of town there’s the already-famous Boulangerie, but we suggest you also try Darbnīca or Red Sun Buffet for coffee and lunch. At Cafe Antikvariāts you can feast on oysters, while MO is perfect for fine dining or a leisurely weekend brunch.
Lielais Dzintars, or Great Amber, is Liepāja’s modern, state-of-the-art concert hall. With a structure and visual image so impressive that it has garnered international architecture awards, this building is worth visiting just to look at it; in any case, check out which concerts or events are taking place during your stay in Liepāja.
Liepāja is unique in that it offers not only great classical music concerts, but unlike other destinations, it also has the title of Latvia’s Rock-’n’-roll Capital. The nightlife in Liepāja is always energetic – you just might end up dancing on the tables of the Fontaine Palace nightclub!
Fans of music festivals should head to Liepāja during the concert-filled Summer Sound – in 2017 it will take place 28 - 29 July. It’s the biggest and best beach party around, guaranteed!
Enthusiasts of sports and an active lifestyle can head to Liepāja to watch international rally racing events, or run in the Liepāja Half-Marathon.
