Travel with kids in airport

Travelling with children

To make your flight smooth and pleasant, we've collected the most important things you should know when planning a vacation with children.

Travelling with infants

In aviation, infants are the youngest passengers aged 0-2 years, and they have the greatest privileges, such as the biggest discount on tickets, free baggage, priority boarding, etc. There are usually so many questions – can you take a stroll or a baby car seat on board, where do you register, shall an infant sit separately or on your lap, can you bring baby food or any liquids you may need during the flight on board, how do you check in, and where do you receive a baby stroll after the flight. We've tried to answer all your possible questions and offer you the detailed information about travelling with infants here.

Ticket discounts for children

Tickets for infants from 0 - 2 years are discounted 90% from the full ticket price (excluding taxes), and children from 2-11 years are discounted 25% from the full ticket price (excluding taxes). Be sure to choose the right fare when booking a ticket for a child on our website; it cannot be bought separately but only together with an adult ticket. In case you decided to take a child with you after your own ticket had been bought, you can still purchase a child ticket separately by contacting our Call centre.

Special kids menu

A flight can be tasty and eating entertaining! Our sky chefs have taken care also about our younger passengers and offer a wide variety of kids' meals. You can order from our pre-order menu freshly baked pancakes, pasta, fish, fruit, vegetables, nuggets and many more. Choose what your child loves the most and make the time pass faster during the flight!

Entertainment on board

To make the journey more cheerful creating the best flying experiences with airBaltic, new onboard entertainment for children is available on all airBaltic flights. Inside the books they will find an outlined city or country which then can be "built" with magic sticker set. There is also a Junior Pilot license that can be signed by the Crew.

Baggage for children

Usually, a child needs even more baggage than a grown-up passenger. We totally understand this, that's why if the booking includes an infant (0-2 y.o) or a child (2-11 y.o), one fully collapsible pram or a stroller, a carrycot or a child car seat can be transported free of charge. Moreover, infants may travel with one piece of checked baggage of up to 10 kg free of charge. For more convenience, one adult + infant baggage may be pooled into one.

Child safety seats

airBaltic is unable to provide child safety seats, but parents are welcome to bring their own car seats or baby baskets on board, as long as the conditions described below are met. Please note that the child safety seat is the passenger's property and, therefore, also the passenger's responsibility.

Conditions for the use of child safety seats on airBaltic flights:

When bringing their own child safety seat on board, the passenger confirms that:

  • The passenger is aware of the airline’s General conditions of carriage.
  • For children under 2 years old: a ticket for a separate seat has been purchased online or through our Call centre, and the passenger brings their own child safety seat.
  • For children aged 2 to 12 years: the child’s weight does not exceed 18 kg and the child’s height does not exceed 100 cm, and the passenger brings their own child safety seat.
  • The safety seat must not exceed 45 cm in width to fit the aircraft seat and must be secured using only the passenger seat’s lap belt.
  • The safety seat is acceptable on airBaltic-operated flights. Please note that partner airlines may have different regulations.
  • If the passenger brings an unlisted child safety seat, there is no guarantee that they will be able to use it on board. Safety seats that consist only of straps that fasten over and/or around the back of the seat cannot be used on board. The safety seat must only be attached using the seat’s lap belt.
  • So-called ‘comfort devices’, which are attached to the passenger seat or placed in the footwell (e.g., inflatable cubes, seat extenders, etc.), may not be used on airBaltic flights for safety reasons.
  • The safety seat is in perfect working order, the passenger is familiar with the manufacturer’s instructions for the seat's use and fitting in an aircraft, and the passenger can attach the safety seat to the passenger seat on their own. Flight attendants will not be able to help fix the safety seat in place.
  • The safety seat must be checked in as hold baggage if it cannot be fitted properly to the passenger seat.
  • The use of a personal child safety seat on board is free of charge, as long as a separate seat for the child is purchased.
  • The child using the safety seat must occupy a window seat, and the accompanying adult should take the seat next to the child’s seat. Emergency exit rows are not allowed to be used for adults with child seating. Depending on aircraft type, additional seating restrictions may apply for safety reasons.
  • The child safety seat must not impede other passengers in the event of a possible emergency evacuation.
  • Only a limited number of children using child safety seats can be accommodated on airBaltic flights, so we recommend booking your tickets in advance.

Suitable child safety seats by EU rules:

The child safety seat must have one of the following approval markers to be used for children occupying a seat on airBaltic-operated flights:

  • The UN standard ECE R44-04 (the last two digits must be 03 or 04 or series of amendments) or ECE R129 with a qualification sign attesting that the child safety seat is approved for use in aircraft.
  • Canadian CMVSS 213/213.1 label stating that the child safety seat is approved for use in aircraft.
  • The German ‘Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft’ (TÜV Doc.: TÜV/958-01/2001).
  • US FMVSS No 213 and manufactured to these standards on or after February 26, 1985, bearing the respective label that the child safety seat is approved for use in aircraft.
  • Australia / New Zealand (CASA) bearing the label displaying ‘For Use in Aircraft’.

Children travelling alone

There are situations when a child has to travel alone and you should not stress about it. We offer an unaccompanied minor service which is available for children ages 5 -17 years. The service ensures that the child is under the supervision of the airline from check-in until the child has met his/her parent or guardian upon arrival at the destination. But starting from 12 years a child can as well travel alone and needs an adult ticket. A ticket for a child under 12 years of age travelling alone can not be bought on our website, but only through Call Center.
