Assistance dogs

At airBaltic, we know how important your assistance dog is to you. Assistance dogs can travel with you for free and stay by your side in the cabin if they meet the requirements. Here’s what you need to know before your flight.

Planning your flight

When you book a flight, you must send us copies of documents that prove your dog is a trained assistance dog:

A certificate from a school of assistance dogs with a valid registration number. The school must be approved by one of these organizations:

Other things to know:

  • Check the entry rules for assistance dogs in the country you're travelling to – some countries don't allow animals, including assistance dogs, to enter or transit through.
  • Contact us before your flight if you're unsure which documents you need.
  • Book early – space for passengers with assistance dogs in the cabin is limited.
  • Emotional support animals are not allowed in the cabin on airBaltic flights. You can fly with an emotional support dog or cat as a pet. For more information, please visit Travelling with pets.
  • Other airlines. If your travel includes flight operated by other airline please check also their requirements.

At the airport

  • Before entering the airport, ensure your dog gets enough food and water before the flight.
  • Please arrive at the airport early.
  • When you arrive, help is available if you asked for it before your flight.
  • Keep your assistance dog with you at all times.
  • Bring all required documents for your dog. Airport staff may check them.

At security:

  • You and your dog must go through security checks. A manual check may be done if needed.
  • Staff will guide you if needed.

Before boarding:

  • Airport staff can help you get on and off the plane if you let us know 48 hours before your flight. Please note that the staff can't assist you while you wait at the gate.
  • You can board the plane early to have more time, but you may not always be among the very first to board.

During the flight

Here's what you need to know if you're flying with an assistance dog:

  • Your dog does not need to be in a carrier and there is no weight limit.
  • The dog must sit on the floor at your feet and not in the aisle.
  • You can't sit in an emergency exit row if you're travelling with an assistance dog.

After the flight

  • When you arrive, you can leave the aircraft with your assistance dog.
  • Airport staff can help you to baggage claim or the exit.
  • Your dog may be checked by airport or border authorities, depending on the country.

If you have a connecting flight:

  • Staff can guide you to your next gate if you requested assistance.
  • Flight information is on screens and given by staff.  If you can’t see the updates, ask a staff member for help

Important:

  • Always check the rules for travelling with your dog in each country.
  • If you need full support during your journey, please travel with a companion.
